About Me
Not So Sweet Nancy is a fully licensed and permitted home kitchen bakery owned and operated by me, Nancy Alfaro, in Danville, California.
My Story
Nine years ago, my mom convinced me to buy my very first KitchenAid stand mixer. There was a great sale, and honestly, the beautiful Cherry Red color drew me in! I wasn't even sure I would use it because I had always thought I didn't really like desserts—they were usually just too sweet for me.
I decided to try making something I had seen on YouTube so I could put my new mixer to use. I tweaked the recipe to my liking, loved the results, and I was hooked!
Since then, I've taken formal training classes at the San Francisco Baking Institute, completed other baking programs, and spent many, many hours practicing, experimenting with new recipes, adapting them and perfecting them until they met my standards.
Friends and family were always asking me to make cakes and desserts for birthdays and special occasions, but before starting a business, I wanted to know what people who didn’t know me thought of my baking.
So, over the course of about six years, I created several groups of neighbors from Danville and San Ramon who would come by almost every week to try a piece of whatever I was baking (for free!) and give me their feedback. Their response was overwhelmingly positive.
Eventually, after 33 years in my career, I decided it was time to leave my job and start a business doing something I truly love.
Why the “Not So Sweet Nancy” Name?
Those who know me would probably describe me as a practical, no-nonsense kind of person and one of the things people consistently say about my desserts is that they're “delicious” and “not so sweet.”
So Not So Sweet Nancy seemed like the perfect name as it matched both my personality and the baked goods I make.
I hope you'll give my baked goods a try!
